Whilst we are all enjoying the summer sun and the longer days, the grasses are in full swing and are now starting to lose their seeds. There is one grass in particular that can cause a whole host of trouble to a dog. So, beware of the foxtail grass – also sometimes known as flea darts or spear grass. This pesky grass has a cluster of seeds in a dart shaped head that falls from the plant and can cause trouble for your dog.
For example, the grass can easily bury itself in a dog’s fur and can even be inhaled. They have a habit of entering through a dog’s paw or ears and quite easily start to travel through the body. They bury themselves under the dog’s skin and can cause abscesses, pain and even death.
If you have walked your dog or been in an area where these grasses are present (even along pathways they can be seen) be sure to give your dog a thorough check over. Not only for grasses, but also ticks as they too are very prevalent especially in long grassy areas. Check their ears, nose, under their collar, eyes, inside their mouth and lips, underbelly, paws and pads, especially between their toes.
Be aware of the symptoms such as constant sneezing, shaking of the head, licking areas, swelling, hotspots and scratching. It is important to attend a vet if you are concerned and feel that your dog may have picked up a grass. These grasses can cause death so it’s important to be on the ball and vigilant.
It’s not to say don’t enjoy walks through fields and grassed areas, just take care!
