If your dog is anything like our cuties, then you will know that when you treat yourself to an ice cream, you will get the dewy puppy dog eyes looking at you. As if to say, “excuse me, did you forget me?” or just “where is mine?”
Last year I brought some silicone lolly moulds and started to make some pupsicles for the dogs. They went down a treat on warm days. Not only refreshing but healthy and stimulating. Plus, there is the added benefit of keeping your own ice cream for yourself and not having to share!
There are lots of differing recipes for dog lollies or ice cream that can be found on the internet. So, it’s worth having a look and maybe finding something your dog will like.
Like humans some dogs have a sweeter tooth and some a more savoury tooth. The popsicles I make are sweet, but you could always use stock as an alternative with maybe liver or chicken. Even a spoon full of their favourite meat will do. Basically anything can work if it freezes, is edible and safe for your dog. You know more than anyone what he/she prefers so maybe it is time to treat them on the long hot summer days?
When I make the pupsicles for the dogs at Home From Home their favourite flavour seems to be yoghurt peanut butter. If you want to make this, you have to make sure that the butter you use doesn’t contain Xylitol as this is extremely dangerous to dogs. Please always double check the ingredients label!
I also like to use bone shaped dog biscuits or dental sticks (they last longer too) as the handle but you can just use the silicone mould handle if you don’t have any treats to hand. I have started making my own dog bone biscuits and other homemade treats (all coming soon) but bonio biscuits are just as good and still enjoyed by all.
Yogurt is a safe diary product for dogs and can be beneficial to the digestive system if they contain probiotics. Plain greek yogurt is the best type for dogs as it doesn’t contain as much lactose. Again, check the ingredients label.
So, if you arm yourself with a natural peanut butter, plain yogurt and dog biscuits you are ready to go. Here is my recipe for 6 dog pupsicles:
Ingredients:
150g of plain yogurt
150g peanut butter (no Xylitol)
6 x bone dog biscuits
1 x set silicone ice lolly moulds
Method:
1) In a mixing bowl add the yogurt and peanut butter and mix until smooth.
2) Spoon the mixture into the moulds until they are 3/4 full.
3) Pop a bone shaped biscuit into the top of each mould and freeze until frozen.
You can play around with the quantities if you want to make more lollies, or mix and match different flavours. My dachshund loves fruit so I also make fruit pupsicles for her as an alternative. These are also simple and again can be added to yogurt as a base. Try things like watermelon, strawberries, banana.
Hopefully you will enjoy making these for your fur babies and, as mentioned above, hopefully you should now be allowed to enjoy your own ice cream/lolly in peace.
Please always double check ingredients to ensure they are safe for dogs. Home From Home is not responsible for what you feed your pet.
